THE MOST USEFUL TROUBLESHOOTING DOCUMENT IN THIS CATALOGUE, and it is worth saying why a manufacturer manual beats every specialist barbecue publisher on this one subject. Weber's troubleshooting table does not list symptoms and remedies; it lists symptoms and DISCRIMINATING TESTS, which is the shape BBQHQ requires of a recorded cause. 'Be sure that there is gas flow to the burner by attempting to match light your burner. If match lighting is successful, the problem lies in the ignition system' is a single sentence that separates two causes a reader cannot otherwise tell apart. It also documents the mechanism nobody else does: stainless screens over the venturi keep spiders out, nests obstruct gas flow and push gas back out of the air opening, and the symptom is 'the odour of gas in conjunction with burner flames that appear yellow and lazy' — which is why a gas smell is not always a leak. Its DANGER box supplies the escalation itself: shut off the gas, extinguish open flames, open the lid, and if the odour continues keep away and call the gas supplier or fire department.

Weber's gas instructions are excellent and are about a Weber appliance: its burner tubes, its spider screens, its regulator. They establish nothing about gas generally, and the general fuel-system rules come from Liquid Gas UK alongside this record.

Weber's opening DANGER box gives a four-step response to smelling gas at the appliance: shut off the gas to the appliance, extinguish any open flames, open the lid, and if the odour continues keep away from the appliance and immediately call the gas supplier or the fire department.
- Open lid is third, not first, and the order is the point. Gas heavier than air pools in a closed cookbox; the lid is opened to let it out, but only after the supply is off and ignition sources are gone. A reader who opens the lid first has ventilated a space that is still filling.
- The final step is NOT a repair instruction. It is 'keep away and call somebody', which is the shape BBQHQ's own escalation already had and could not previously cite.

- Weber writes this about a Weber appliance. BBQHQ generalises it no further than gas barbecues, and the general fuel-system rules come from Liquid Gas UK.
“To check for leaks, wet fittings with the soap-and-water solution, using a spray bottle, brush or rag. If bubbles form, or if a bubble grows, there is a leak. ... WARNING: Do not ignite burner when leak-checking. ... Do not use an open flame to check for gas leaks. Be sure there are no sparks or open flames in the area while you check for leaks. ... If there is a leak at connection (7, 8 or 9), turn off the gas. DO NOT OPERATE THE GRILL.”
Weber specifies the leak test as a soap-and-water solution of roughly 20% liquid soap to 80% water, applied to fittings with the burner control off and the gas supply on but the burner NOT ignited; bubbles forming or growing indicate a leak. An open flame must never be used to check for leaks. Where a leak is found at a hose or regulator connection the instruction is to turn off the gas and NOT operate the grill.
- When:
- Weber requires the check before first use, after any fitting is disconnected and reconnected, after routine maintenance, and after a period of storage or non-use — not only when a leak is suspected.
- The instruction ends in a refusal, which is why it is citable here. Weber does not tell a consumer how to fix a leaking regulator; it says stop using the appliance and contact customer service. BBQHQ's rule against repair instructions and Weber's own limit are the same limit.
- The manual adds that leak-test solutions may be slightly corrosive and connections should be rinsed with water afterwards.

Weber separates an ignition-system fault from a gas-supply fault with a single test: attempt to light the burner with a match. If match lighting succeeds, the problem lies in the ignition system rather than in gas delivery.
- The sentence this record was looking for. a recorded cause has long had to carry a discriminating signal, and gas ignition was the case where BBQHQ had none: 'it will not light' is equally consistent with a dead igniter and an empty cylinder. Weber publishes the test that separates them, and it is one action a reader can actually perform.
- Weber's own follow-ups within the ignition branch — electrode wires seated in their terminals, battery installed correctly with its plastic wrapping removed — are recorded as part of the same observation because they only apply once the match test has pointed at the ignition system.
“The combustion air opening(s) of the burner tube(s) is/are fitted with stainless steel screen(s) to help prevent spiders and other insects from spinning webs and building nests inside the venturi section of the burner tube(s). These nests can obstruct the normal gas flow, and can cause gas to flow back out of the combustion air opening(s). Symptoms of this kind of obstruction include the odour of gas in conjunction with burner flames that appear yellow and lazy. This obstruction could result in a fire in and around the gas valve(s), causing serious damage to your grill.”
Weber fits stainless screens over the burner tubes' combustion air openings to stop spiders and insects nesting in the venturi. A nest obstructs normal gas flow and can push gas back out of the air opening, and the stated symptom is the odour of gas together with yellow, lazy burner flames. The consequence Weber names is a fire in and around the gas valve.
- A smell of gas that is not a leak. BBQHQ's smell-of-gas problem offered two causes, both of them escaping-gas causes, and this is a third mechanism with a completely different remedy and a distinguishing sign a reader can see rather than smell.
- Weber states the correct pattern against which 'yellow and lazy' is judged: tips occasionally flickering yellow, light blue, dark blue. Occasional yellow tips are normal; a yellow lazy flame is not.

Weber states that burner tube ports become dirty with repeated use and that blocked or dirty ports restrict full gas flow, giving three signs: the grill does not reach the desired temperature, the grill heats unevenly, and one or more burners do not ignite. An erratic flame pattern, a low flame at the high setting, and flames that do not run the whole length of the burner tube are all answered by cleaning the ports.
- This is the mechanism BBQHQ's uneven-heat problem asserted from first principles for a long time. Weber states it, names the symptom set, and gives the remedy.
- Note that 'one or more burners do not ignite' appears here AND under the ignition fault above. That overlap is real and is why the match test matters: it is the test that tells the two apart.
- Weber forbids one obvious wrong remedy: 'Do not enlarge valve orifice or burner ports when cleaning the valve or burner.'

- The figure:
- A number where BBQHQ had 'several minutes'. The existing remedy for a valve left open said to ventilate for several minutes, which was a guess in the right direction. Five minutes is Weber's figure and it replaces the vaguer wording.
- Why it happens:
- The manual does not explain why five minutes; it states the interval. BBQHQ records the instruction and does not invent the reasoning behind the number.
“Burner does not ignite, or flame is low when burner control knob is on high position. Fuel could be low or empty. Replace cartridge or replace or refill cylinder.”
Weber gives fuel state as the first check when a burner will not ignite or the flame is low with the control knob at high: the cartridge or cylinder could be low or empty, and the remedy is to replace or refill it.
- Recorded despite being obvious, because Weber lists it FIRST among the low-flame causes and because a diagnostic tree that omits the commonest cause sends readers to strip a burner tube over an empty bottle.
- The manual notes separately that a cylinder which appears empty may still contain gas and must be transported and stored accordingly.
“Should a grease fire occur, turn off the burner and leave lid closed until fire is out. Should an uncontrolled flare-up occur, move food away from the flames until flaring subsides. ... Do not attempt to extinguish an oil or grease fire with water. ... Experiencing flare-ups. Grill must be preheated with burner on high for 10 to 15 minutes. Clean the cooking grates thoroughly to remove grease. The cookbox may be dirty and is not allowing grease to flow into removable catch pan.”
Weber separates two responses. For an uncontrolled FLARE-UP, move the food away from the flames until the flaring subsides. For a GREASE FIRE, turn off the burner and leave the lid CLOSED until the fire is out, and never attempt to extinguish an oil or grease fire with water. Recurring flare-ups are attributed to grease on the cooking grates and to a dirty cookbox not letting grease drain into the catch pan, and the manual asks for a 10-to-15-minute preheat on high.
- Two opposite instructions about the lid, and the distinction is the whole value. Move the food and leave the lid alone for a flare-up; shut the lid and stop cooking for a grease fire. BBQHQ's flare-ups problem had already reasoned its way to both halves and to the warning against closing the lid on a flare-up, and this is the manufacturer confirming the split rather than BBQHQ asserting it.
- The prohibition on water is stated in the front-cover DANGER box rather than in the troubleshooting table, which is to say Weber treats it as a hazard instruction and not a technique note.
- The grease mechanism is written for a gas appliance with a catch pan. BBQHQ's problem covers charcoal cookers too and the grease behaviour is the same; the CATCH PAN detail is not transferred to cookers that have no such thing.

A flame is never used to test for leaks, and a connection that still leaks is a reason to stop using the appliance rather than to keep adjusting it.
- Whether a burner that will not light has an ignition fault or a gas-delivery fault is settled by trying to light it with a match: if it lights, gas is reaching the burner and the fault is in the ignition system.
- Spiders and insects nest inside the venturi section of a gas barbecue's burner tubes, obstructing gas flow and forcing gas back out of the combustion air opening.
